Once upon a time, nestled amidst the serene beauty of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, a group of foreign residents witnessed the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Stan in 2005. Moved by the widespread destruction and loss of life, they banded together to offer humanitarian assistance to those in need.
Out of this shared determination to make a difference, an organization was born. They called it ODIM, an acronym for "Organization for the Development of the indigenous Maya" with their initial focus on providing immediate relief and aid, they soon realized the pressing need for sustainable healthcare solutions in San Juan and San Pablo La laguna.
Supported by churches, organizations, and incredible individuals, ODIM's mission expanded beyond emergency aid. They recognized the importance of preventive healthcare and education in promoting long-term well-being.
Today, after 15 years, we can say that the organization has impacted more than 10.000 people in our communities through two clinics and five community programs that seek to provide health and education.
As we commemorate fifteen years of progress, it’s crucial to highlight the pivotal role women have played in our organization’s development. Currently, they constitute over 75% of ODIM’s workforce and hold a predominant role across all community initiatives. Notably, cervical cancer prevention has emerged as a key focus within the Women’s Health project, emphasizing the importance of pap smear screenings. This underscores our dedication to fostering women’s education within the community.
