We are fundraising to combat malnutrition in rural Guatemala.
Dirty Girl Adventures (aka. Chicas de la Tierra) is returning to beautiful Guatemala in February 2023 for a life-changing service/adventure challenge to raise funds for the Healthy Mommy & Me initiative of the Organization for the Development of Indigenous Maya (ODIM) in Guatemala. We will hike the highlands, kayak on Lake Atitlan, explore the forest on a bird tour, and participate in local cultural activities. We will also help provide healthier home environments by building clean-burning stoves and installing eco-filters for clean water to support mothers and their babies.
Guatemala faces serious challenges when it comes to malnutrition. Two-thirds of the overall population live on less than $2 per day. As a result, the prevalence of stunting in children under 5 years is one of the highest in the world – and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean. In fact, in the rural communities where ODIM works, 8 out of 10 children are malnourished.
The current Covid-19 crisis has made conditions even worse, with many families losing jobs and being unable to support their families. This community has reported 5 times the cases of childhood stunting during the pandemic.
Through the Healthy Mommy & Me initiative, ODIM provides mothers and babies from rural communities with prenatal and postnatal health care, health education, family planning, vitamins, supplements, and food vouchers, to give the children a healthy start in life for the first 1000 days from conception to their second birthday – and you can be a part of this great effort!
Any donation - big or small - will go a long way to helping us meet our goal. All donations go directly to ODIM’s Healthy Mommy & Me program and do not pay for any personal trip expenses.
Will you help us give a child in Guatemala a healthy start in life?
